This year’s St. Peter’s Fiesta marked the 30th anniversary of women’s seine boat racing—and the women of Salty Oar made sure it would be one to remember.

In their first-ever race season, this rookie crew pulled off a stunning victory in the Women’s Seine Boat Championships. Not one of them had rowed before, and with only a few practices under their belts before race day, they were true underdogs. As team member Jen put it:
“Our first practice was our first time picking up an oar and we really had no idea what we were doing, but we’re athletic, humble, and coachable. We fully embraced the underdog mentality and gave it 100%.”
The one thing they all had in common? CrossFit.
United through their training at CrossFit Cape Ann and CrossFit Iron Spider in Salem, these women proved what functional fitness is all about. Strength. Grit. Teamwork. And the ability to rise to any challenge outside the gym. Their dedication to training didn’t just help them win—it helped them belong, even in an event that was completely new.
Led by Coach Suzanne Clerkin and guided by Captain Rick Miles, who brought decades of nautical experience to the boat, the team quickly found their rhythm. Suzanne’s coaching helped turn raw athleticism into efficient teamwork, while Rick’s calm presence and deep knowledge of the course gave them the confidence to push hard and race smart.
CrossFit Cape Ann was proudly represented across the board, with CFCA athletes competing in all three women’s finalist boats. It was a powerful reminder that our gyms prepare people for much more than workouts. We train for life. For adventure. For moments like these.

Congrats to Salty Oar and to all of our athletes who showed up and rowed their hearts out. You embodied everything we believe in—and you made Fiesta history while doing it. Viva!
